You could use that to display messages about the forum, about new users who have registered and maybe also agree to follow each other (if they use Twitter that is).
Blog.
You could start a small blog and use that as a PR blog for people on the forum. They could write promotional material about what they do and explain this and that about their websites and add a link back to their website. You could use WordPress for this and also use a WordPress Plugin that automatically "Tweets" (that means post to the Twitter website) the title of your Blog post.
What do you get out of giving away all this free promotion?
Well they agree to write the content for a free link back to their website, you get lots of free posts to Twitter which in turn may get people on Twitter following you and in turn, visiting the forum. You have lots of free blog content for which the search engines will crawl and possibly throw up a few terms in the search results and get you some more visitors that way. Oh and you can be sneaky and add Google Adsense or Yahoo Publisher Network adverts to the blog so you have the possibility of making a few quid out of all this lol
Lastly but by no means least.
You could start a Facebook group or fan page, probably better with a fan page. Like with Twitter, there is an RSS Feed application you can use to post your blog posts to the fan page, although you can limit how much of the post is posted and can also limit it to just the title. You may find you get more fans because there are regular updates on the fan page which will give the forum more exposure for minimal effort on your part and of course, the people who write for your blog get exposure through your accounts on Twitter and on Facebook.
