Wood Displays and Craft Items

Postby beckyboo » 14 Dec 2009, 14:56

For ages I've been waiting for my dad to set up his workshop again after moving down south and to be honest i don't think he will as he isn't in the best of health and he doesn't have as much space is his new home for wood storage etc as he did before
So promoted by a thread on another forum about a bangle mandrel i wondered if the woodies on here have thought about display stands and general craft items
I'm after a quote for a wooden display bust either raw wood, varnished or waxed , it would need to stand about 12 inches high
http://www.palaydisplay.com/Standup-Woo ... 17653.html
something along the lines of this one

I'm not fussed about what kind of wood ,most wood even the cheaper off cuts come up nice with a good sand and wax

I know alot of jewellers look for nice stands and many decoupage or string coil them so they have something unique and eyecatching...and theres a whole range of display ideas out there from simple wooden cones to bangle trees as well as simple wooden waxed blocks for display

any takers on giving me a quote ?

To make one like the one that you posted * be labour intensive and probably cost a lot more than that if handmade. There are ear ring stands and I suppose that a variation on the one that you mentioned could be done for necklaces, see if another woody comes up, maybe Tam can

Thanks for the vote of confidence Pete, but looking at that stand I've no idea how that could be done on a lathe. Unless it was a CNC control job. The only way I can see of doing it otherwise is by carving. LONG TIME!

I am willing to try most turning jobs, but I know my limitations.

I know that you do a bit of carving. I haven't got the space or tools for something like that. Wonder how many axis you'd have to have to turn it on a lathe :smile2:

Just checked back into that site, and the pieces are all hand carved. At that price it must be the sweat shop production line. IMO.

That's what I was thinking, no way I could make it for that price...
