Soaps which look like edible items?

Postby Nickie » 01 Dec 2009, 15:54

I've been thinking about having a go at making soaps so have been looking at various sites and suppliers. Among the stuff I've looked at was something about the law being changed to prevent soaps which look like edible items being sold. I can't remember where I seen this though and can't find it again so wondered if any of you have heard anything regarding this???

There is a very long thread on the dark side, regarding, products that look like food.

http://www.ancientwisdom.biz/forms/soapb/index.php - I know have had TS in regarding some of their imported soaps.

Maybe that's where I seen it then Jane, I'll try to find it a bit later on...I personally love the soaps which look like cakes etc. Have you any idea where I might find the particular piece of legislation that prevents their sale?

We personally have only heard what is on the dark side.

Our TS dept, is okay with our "cakes" so that is all that concerns us:)

A lot of it is open to interpretation.

Arh right, I might give them a call about it and ask them about it, it'd be interesting to see what they say about it...so why have the company you mention about had TS in then, any idea?

There was lots on the DS thread with different folks TS officers interpreting differently..

From what I remember, anything that looks like a food item and smells like one was to be banished for ever, as there is a risk of children eating them! I gather that the leeway was on items that "look" but are not scented.. though some seemed to get hammered for that also..

I think the general concensus was speak to your own TS officers, and ask their interpretation.. as it did seem to vary wildly from region to region..

Personally, I think the nanny state has had yet another sense of humour failure..
Q:"did you enjoy yourself?"
A:"I had to, there wasn't anyone else here to enjoy..."

Yes, me too Gordon...would you leave a normal bar of soap within reach of a child? I certainly wouldn't so soap cakes aren't any different in my opinion. If they're kept out of reach which any bar of soap should be then there shouldn't be a problem! This reminds me of something that came up when I was at uni...domestic staircases kill more people per year than car accidents- you can't drink and drive (and rightly so) or talk on your mobile whilst driving but they don't ban these activities for going up and down staircases in your own home or even ban the use of staircases completely and make us all live in bungalows lol! It does make you wonder sometimes just how far they're going to push this health and safety malarkey. Most you can see reason in but some are just plain ridiculous!

Do date, there is no data to show that anyone died or was even ill through eating soap.

One lady did complain of diarrhoea after eating too much dove

Hmmmm, there's some strange people in this world lol!

It's about time all these health and safety people got real and stop putting silly restrictions on things and assess things on their likelihood of risk as opposed to risk alone.

As you are only thinking about making soap, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Only look for problems when you have to ;) ;)
