Gingerbread Houses!

Postby Nickie » 03 Dec 2009, 23:20

I've wanted to make one of these since I was a kid but with there being so many kids (I'm one of 7), my mum never had the time to do it with us and I've craved one ever since I first saw one in an old recipe book. I intend to start tomorrow and it's turned into a bit of a competition between me and my OH's mother lol! I'll try to take pics in stages as I go along and post them here...Is anyone else making one this year or are you sticking with a cake???

I made a gingerbread house about 35 years ago - it went down very well with the family.

I spent hours icing "lace" curtains at the window and decorating the roof.

Before "soap" I used to make everything for Christmas, mincemeat, petite fours, mincepies, cake, stollen, cheese biscuits, pudding etc.

I used to make the pudding on "Stir Sunday" - the whole family came round to have a stir, it was quite an event.

Sadly now I do not have the time.

Good luck with the house - hope it goes well.

I bought one from Aldi last week. They are really cute. I tried making one last year but it went very soggy and no one wanted to eat it.

LOL, yes I'm a bit worried about things going soggy on me too. The gingerbread is so thin that if it's exposed to the air for too long it goes all floppy. My mum came up with a good idea though and told me to put it into a plastic bag as soon as I've finished working with it for the day and to work quickly with it...I so hope it's not a disaster, I'm really looking forward to doing it lol!

The ones in Alsdi were all warpped in celephane so I guess that's the best trick.

LOL, yes they do look too good to eat although I doubt my son and my neices will feel the same when they're tucking into it lol!

Hadn't though of cellophane...once it's errected though cellophane might not be the best idea as I wouldn't be able to seal it to keep the air out to stop it from going soggy unless you're thinking along different lines to me?
