you can't beat a knitted cardy and hat to keep a newborn baby warm..i used to love wrapping mine up and putting them in their prams (proper pram not buggy ) and taking them out

I knew a woman who used to knit for prem babies when we were on the oncolog ward, I still have a knitted fairy she did for my daughter , it goes on my Christmas tree every year

my gran was a prolific knitter and she used to say " don't buy it , i'll knit you one"

I saw that too, might have to invest this year! I can crochet a little, but have no idea about patterns and the like!

One of the residents where I work had a really cool knitted nativity set this Christmas, I loved it and would love to make one for next year- I can knit a little but I'd need some serious practise and instruction if I wanted to make something like that lol!

I can knit! But I just don't seem to have the patience to make anything big.

When I was at primary school we had a knitting lesson every week. Can you imagine trying to teach about 15-20 kids how to knit?! Well, actually I can!! A few years ago I (tried to) teach the kids in my class (P7s, so about 11 years old) to knit - goodness, it was hard work. However it was lovely when they went home and discovered members of their family that could also knit and they helped them out and encouraged them. I actually met one of the kids out of that class a few months ago and she said that one of the few things that she could remember from that year was learning to knit. I asked her if she still did and she laughed and said no! Oh well, at least I tried!

I remember doing French knitting - with a bobbin - at school.

Does anyone still do that?

OMG! You're a much braver woman than I am...being a teacher is one of my worst nightmares in itself lol but trying to teach that many kids to knit...well you must surely wear a halo lol!

It's things like knitting that should be brought back in every school IMO. All my mothers side of the family were tailors going back many many generations in the Leeds area. My mother is amazing at tailoring even though she's never had any formal training and despite the last 3 generations of her family not being involved in tailoring. I often think how sad it is that I've never taken the time to learn from her as once she goes there'll be nobody left in the family who sews and makes clothes and soft furishings anymore. It truly does seem to be in her blood where as if I were given a piece of material I wouldn't know where to start lol!
