New cookery website... your thoughts and suggestions please.

Postby soapitup » 03 Dec 2009, 08:07

For a couple of years I have been wanting to launch a website that not only has recapies, but also has video tutorials etc.

The problem is these days there sites are very commen, so would love your folks to let me know what you would like to see, maybe cator for a specific age range, lifestyle, food area or provide something unique.

I also need to find loads of recapies (copyright free) that I can use, so If you have any recapies you would like to share please email me using the "email" link below.

Thanks.

As far as I remember, from putting together a charity cookbook, no recipe is copyright or indeed copyrightable.. the percieved wisdom is that it is courteous to attribute any recipe you use, or indeed modify

Just my thoughts,, but as you pointed out, this is a difficult market to crack from a website point of view (there was a lady on Dragons Den wanting to do similar, and struggled to get backing), There are many recipe sites.. BBC Food, RecipeCzar to name but 2.. and I am not sure how many folk would actually want a tutorial.. although most of us like to watch the celebrity chefs do something on TV...

Something which may make your site unique is to focus on first time cooks?? Students especially?? In which case, a book like "4 Ingresiants" by Kim McCosker and Rachel Bermiongham might be a good starting point.. The recipes are fun, as the title suggests, all are 4 ingredients or less, and they are all quick and easy.. ideal for busy families, students with short attention spans, and the like!

My other choice for a starter book would be real fast food and real fast puddings both by nigel slater.. they are older books, and great for busy people as the recipes are based on storecupboard items predominantly, with a few extra bits.. so they are quick and simple (and therefore easy to do on video!)

I know, my early thoughts were to have like a pick n mix website, where you could choose a starter, main and desert from a flip screen, but this would be complicated to do; which is why I need to find a neich. I like the Idea of 4 Items or less... or even cookery for kids.

It has been something I wanted to do for ages, but need to do a lot of reseach before I consider going ahead with it.

Well was just reading up on the copyright thing and aparently ingrediants can't be copyrighted but methods and instructions can be subject to copyright as it is someone elses writing. (if that makes sense)

There's only so many ways you can write "add the flour to the rest of the ingredients"

We took legal advice, and one of our Trustees was a Senior Manager at Penguin Books, and for your own due diligence you should look at getting formal advice, but sticking to basic ingredient lists and instructions, rather than copying someone's writing style should be perfectly Ok..

Yea it's pretty clear I am going to have to look into the legal side in much more detail, as if I allowed people to automatically submit recapies there could also be problems if they copy and pasted everything from gorden ramseys cook book.

Anyway at least I have a head start now, though probably won't do too nmuch till the new year as I've got soap making and website promotion to get my head around 1st.

The best cookery book I ever had was called

"Help - somethings gone wrong - what do I do now cook book"

It was full of ideas on how to turn a disaster into a creation.
