I think psychologically the cost of going and getting is "invisible" expenditure, whereas P&P is very visible..! My O/h if asked to get some peas for example from the Supermarket on his way home (I get most/all the shopping, so this is a rarity) will invariably turn up with Tesco ones because they cost him less, despite the fact that he knows I prefer proper branded ones that cost another 80p or so.. yet he will cheerfully drive 40 mins to Ikea in Warrington to pick up a £1.50 bag of tealights because they are cheap!!

According to MSE, if you live more than 8 miles away from your supermarket it is cheaper to pay £5 delivery than to drive there.
Plus you will not impulse buy :smile2:

Oh, I used to use tesco home delivery all the time, and lived less than 2 miles from the store.. but in those days it was free over £50.. Now you have to pay £5.. which I wouln't object to, but they limit you to 10 of any item.. and the whole point of using it was to bulk buy boring stuff that is heavy, and we use all the time - 50 tins of tomatoes and so on.. now it is limited to 10, it defeats the object!

I will not ask what you do with 50 tins of toms?

Have you got a restaurant?

Do they really? Why do they do that?

I live less than a mile away from my Tesco Extra but hate the company with a passion, not to mention all those people who just stop dead in front of you so you almost fall over them. I really can't tell you how much that winds me up lol. I much prefer to go shopping at 3 in the morning when there's nobody around- the only trouble with that is is that you often find they're still waiting for their daily deliveries of bread etc so you often go home without some of the stuff you went for!

I do usually check the prices of stuff online when I am shopping for a specific item - particularly as local shopping facilities are fairly mundane and anything at all unusual is not to be found without a trip on a bus or train etc... In principle I don't mind paying P&P for stuff to be delivered, and often as Judi said internet suppliers have lower overheads and this the cost is offset, but sometimes it just beggars belief..

I wanted gluten free oats to make the apple cookie recipes folk suggested for me on here.. I found some online for £3.49 / 500g which is expensive, but acceptable given that gluten free stuff has to come from specialist and often small scale producers with far higher overheads.. then I discovered P&P was £6.72 on top.. so £10.30 for 500g!!!

I know businesses have to find a postal solution that works for them, and it is far from practical to take every parcel to the post office for pricing and weighing; and yes I know P&P includes the invisible costs of time effort and packing materials, but £10.30 for a little bag of oats is just so ridiculous..

Topping for Pizza base, Soups, Stews and casseroles, Chilli, pasta sauces.. they all get made fresh here - partly because I object to the likes of Dolmio authentic "made in holland" Italian sauces and the premium they charge for not a lot of content, and partly because I have always "cooked" rather than reheated..

Now that we have a special diet in the household, many pre prepared things are off limits anyway as wheat flour creeps in to the most interesting and unusual places (sauces, and even sweet things like Ice cream! - and no, I have not used tinned tomatoes to make ice cream Jane!! :smile2: )
