Hi there,

There are essentially 3 types of wax open to you: paraffin (cheapest), soya (in between) and beeswax (a little more expensive depending on where you buy from).

I guess it all depends on what your ethics are regarding the 'natural thang'.

We don't make candles to sell but have started experimenting with soya (cost us about £20 for 5 Kgs).

We bought some wicks with a base, put the wicks in cheap, whisky tumblers, and pegged them at the top with a little support to keep them upright.

We melted the wax in a microwave, then added some essential oil and a few botanicals and poured. That reall was about it!

It seems quite easy - the only thing we had any slight problem with was the candle sinking in the middle like a cake made from a poor mix! But that was easily rectified by melting a little more of the mix and evening it off.

Anyway, good luck! Report back with your efforts!

Don't candles sink in the middle anyway when the wax dries and you have to top it up??
Don't ask me why I think that though :? I'm not too sure!

By the sounds of things it appears to happen to most who attempt it but as sudslaw suggets above you can just top the wax up where it's sagged!

Of course, if you want to go for the full on torture, me and my mum got 6 raw eggs, removed the insides and faffed around getting a wick through a tiny hole in the top end, and jiggled around getting hot wax in a small hole at the bottom to make egg shaped candles.. great for folk with OCD/fondness for repetitive behaviour.. NOT good for parents and 9yr old kids!

It did work though.. but they candles were a bit lopsided!

LOL, I've heard it all now Gord, whatever made you do that lol? I think I'd have to opt for a 2 part mould and stick them together, I bet doing it with egg shells was a nightmare lol!

It must have been on Blue peter, or in a magazine.. it was after the "winter of Discontent/3 day week" and we used to have long power cuts every day so mum had used a lot of candles and we had lots of little bits.

I think at the time it was just something different to do! ;)
