Help please, on paper cutting.

Postby Tam » 08 Dec 2009, 09:13

In these days of the 'H&S' regulations I'm having problems finding a paper guillotine similar to the old type with the side blade you raise and lower to cut. Rather than the ones that everyone seems to be selling these days, the so called safety cutter with the round wheel.

I have a round wheel one but find it tends to tear the paper instead of leaving a nice crisp cut edge.

If anyone knows where to buy these things I would be grateful for any help you can chuck my way. I promise not to cut any of my bits off if I get one. ;)
regards

There's one here on Etsy although it'd be coming from the USA and it doesn't state postage costs to the UK so it might be worth searching elsewhere first!

Thanks for your help. Just ordered one.

I asked the question on both forums thinking they where hard to find.  Then when I goggled for the ones you suggested I got killed in the rush. Reminder to myself - Must use google more, before asking stupid questions.

Oh, Enjoy your guillotine, but I would add the following in case anyone else has the same dilemmas!

The rotary ones do vary in quality.. and they tend to cut smaller quantities, so not brilliant if you want to make 20 of something.. But some of the rotary ones have a cutter mat which the wheel ride along.. you do have to replace the strip as the blade wears it away, but it gives a better cut than the ones that run the wheel along a steel strip.

The mat ones also tend to operate as a lift and cut bar,so positioning is far easier.. the standard type have a fixed bar, and you have to jiggle paper and card under the plastic strip - fiddly, and sometimes less accurate.

Whichever type you use, you do have to replace the blades!! - if yours wasnt cutting neatly, the blade is probably worn out! - not all are interchangeable..

The huge huge huge benefit of rotaryy over guillotine is specifically for card/paper crafters.. the variety of blades.. you can score, perforate, cut straight, wavy and patterened edges perfectly every time.. blades are usually only a couple of £'s and you can add to the collection as an when you need them!
Q:"did you enjoy yourself?"
A:"I had to, there wasn't anyone else here to enjoy..."

The health and safety regulation is an essential thing in paper cutting. The cutting machine should be safe and advanced that have nice characteristics of fine cutting edge and give the crisp results. The http://www.tradekey.com is a good site for paper cutting machines.
