Fusing Glass

Postby makeitbig » 06 Dec 2009, 13:51

I've just spotted a Glass fusing starter kit that says you can use a microwave (800 watt plus) to do this.

Has anyone actually had a go of fusing glass in a microwave?

I used one to make meringues (the lightest fluffiest you will ever try, but not the prettiest!) and when they first came out, was fascinated what they do to bits of soap!.. but fusing glass?? sounds risky!!

Dont they come with instructions/warnings not to turn them on without something with a reasonable moisture content in?? I haven't had one for many years, but I thought it would burn out the thing that makes the microwaves if they were not absorbed?? - or does fusing glass count?? (why doesn't a glass melt??)

You have me curious now..! go find out more!! - if it works, it would be fantastically cheap to make fused glass, you can get an old microwave for a tenner or less at a car boot! :) :) :)

Its an ebay listing for it from a well know seller, there is a video on it also but I didn't watch it - I think its a demo. I'll get the link in a bit so you can have a look.

wow.. not "cheap" at £76.. but I guess a helluva lot cheaper than buying a kiln on the offchance you might enjoy it.. Pity you are limited in size to such small pieces though.
