Hi from the East Midlands :)

Well the footie is on so I thought I would escape and find a new UK craft forum, as you do, so here I am lol

I am a decorative artist and basically decorate blank items eg, trays, boxes, letter racks, plaques..infact anything that can be painted.
I like buying items off Ebay or from charity shops/car boots and giving them a makeover and putting them back on Ebay, I have coffee tables...plant stands...nest of tables plus kitchen tables and chairs to complete atm but it something I really enjoy.
The larger items being my outside/summer work and the smaller items my inside/winter work.

I also do pencil portraits from photographs and am really quite busy with these.

Looking forward to chatting to you all about everything and nothing :)

Hi Lajoni, great to see you here! Interesting hobby you have there- it'd be great to see some of your finished work. Do you have any pics or a website? Do you sell any of your items or are they purely for personal use? I take it you sell your sketches with saying you're quite busy with them? I'd love to see them, they sound great- I wish I could do stuff like that!

Thanks Nickie

The prices are....

A4 = £35 per single portrait + £20 per additional head
A3 = £45 per single portrait + £25 per additional head

and the client emails me their choice of photo, which obviously have to be as clear as possible and thats all there is to it lol...x

Well it's diffiult to say really Nickie as I start and then get up and get a coffee do a bit more then go to the loo, do abit more then have to go to the shops, prepare tea etc so you get the gist lol.

The pencil portraits I only do at weekends as I work full time and don't feel like drawing after a day at work so I would say one weekend sometimes 2 depending.

You say they are cheap but I am kept relatively busy if I charged more, people may like them but couldn't justify paying that amount. I would rather sell 5 @ £35 than 2 @ £60 which is what I think would happen.

Costing is very difficult for any handmade product and imo the time put in is the costliest factor, but if I charged per hour I would sell zilch, sad but true :(

Yes, that's always the risk isn't it although I would personally expect to pay a lot more for a hand sketched portrait! That said, I guess there's a lot you can do with graphic programs now such as Adobe Illustrator and the like which are incredibly realistic...I did this a few nights ago with just a few clicks but it's nothing on your hand drawn ones, they're brilliant and obviously pick up so much more detail than a computer program can! There's elements of this pic which look false and computer generated and therefore give it away as not being the real McCoy!
