Fabric Fetish

Postby makeitbig » 29 Nov 2009, 15:19

For those of you who may have ventured into the jewellery making section - you will see that I have posted about my bead fetish, I ended by saying I also have a fbric fetish, so thought it only fair to come in here and confess that also - as it is Sunday and all, confession is good for the soul they say.

I love fabrics. I don't often go into a haberdashery store and buy fabrics (unless the kids need a fancy dress outfit or something making). My fabric collection is often added from charity shops - preloved clothes or curtains, pillowcases etc. Sound odd? Well. I used to just buy fabric I liked for no purpose, which was pointless, expensive and took up a lot of room. Then, my interest in collectors dolls houses and accessories gave me a reason to collect fabrics and in smaller quantities.

I started to seek out small print fabrics and silks, satins etc even leather scraps. From these I would make tiny 1/12th scale (1 inch = 1 foot) handbags, bedding (when I came across a miniature pleater - which are great fun), curtains, cushions and anything else I could think of.
Then I went to a fantstic craft centre which sold squares - I am told these are called fat quarters of very fine net in many colours - mostly pastel colours - some were decorated with silver glitter and some sort of silver paint which made them look exquisite. I bought those with miniture wedding veils and accessories in mind. It was great to have a focus for my fetish at last.

I still have more material than I can ever use, but my things to make list will always be full.

Do you have a fabric fetish?

Good to find another horder of fabric, in fact I have stacks of everything, fabric, beads, card you name it I have got it. Now have two rooms, both in a mess, according to DH maybe he is slightly right as I seem to spend ages looking for something I know I have but just cannot lay my hands on it, Yet!

Excellent, I was sure I couldn't be the only one. I am sure like me you also think it will all come in handy one day.

Any sewing experts in here?

I have an old (but perfectly ok) singer. Now the thread has been bunching up at the back, which i now know is a tensioning problem (god bless google)- but what should i be setting the tension at? how do i know if it is too tight (too loose means it bunches!!)

My supposed computer room has recently become what can only be called a fabric storage room. My sewing machine is also in there and that's actually the only part of the room I can get to without having to cllimb/sit/stand on fabric.

I also get all of my fabric from charity shops, car boots and kind donations.

I also have a button obssession but maybe that's another topic lol

Oh! Thats a new one on me. No button fetish here. Well I never.

I have a sewing machine that my oh bought me a few years back but I can't use it really. It tangles up and comes unthreded and I don't really know how to fix it then or why its done it, so I gave up and continued to sew everything by hand. Which is sad because I would love to be able to to the things you cn do with a sewing machine, it must be great.

I do get satisfaction with hand sewing, but what takes my mum 5 minutes with her machine takes me a good hour by hand.

If I could use the machine though, I would probably buy even more material. :D
