I agree that she wasn't just "relaxed" she was downright careless....

The first time I made CP, I put a thick sweat shirt on to protect my arms; dark glasses (becaus I didn't have goggles and rubber gloves...after a few years, I'm much more relaxed about it....there's only Adam and I in the house but I make sure to tell him where the Lye solution is and I make him follow me into the kitchen so I can show him which jug it's in...even though I know he won't be coming in until my soap is done...

I do whipped cp so I whisk it with and electric whisk and it does splash but I've only every got the tiniest little dots of it on me...it stings but it's never scarred me....

Definitely go on one of Jane's courses, Karen...I'm sure it will dispell your fears....:)

We now find that the most dangerous parts of making soap are:

A. Lifting 50kg blocks of the stuff - not good for the back
B. Walking in the work shop - the floor gets covered in oils etc - so we do the soapmakers waddle ( aspecial way of walking so that you don't slip. ( yes it does get scrubbed weekly!)

We do still wear eye protection - as I once had a splash in the eye, it stung like billyo but no lasting damage.

Always keep the vinegar to hand;)

Yes, it burns quite quickly, I have to use it once a month to unblock the sinks, it often splashes back as I pour it and I have extremely sensetive skin so I feel it in seconds. I'm not worried for me prticularly - I just worry how you would store the mixture safely. Even though my 7 year old isn't allowed in the kitchen, the older two are. I do however have 2 nights a week where the kids stay elsewhere, so I suppose I could make pour the stuff in the morning of one day and then make the mixture the following morning while they are still away - then I could put lock on a kitchen cupboard to keep it while it did its stuff as it were.
I fancy doing the whipped effect with the cp - it looks so nice.

Sorry, we cross posted.

Yes - will keep vinegar to hand after reading that story. Defintely. My kitchen floor is usually slippy with dogs muddy paws anyway lol - well used to that. :)

It's a bit easier to get right, I think....you don't have to worry so much about temperatures...and I make 2 kilo blocks in an afternoon...then wrap it in a towel and store it on a high shelf unit in the 'spare' room...

And...unlike that silly woman in that article...I don't stop in the middle to make supper ;)
