Glass candle holders with lids...where can I get them?

Postby Nickie » 26 Dec 2009, 18:09

My beloved candle has now died- it cost a fortune in as far as candles go so I'm a bit gutted but have decided to have a go at making my own and maybe make more of them in different fragrances but I need to get the containers first and can't find them anywhere. I'd just go for any old glass container but I particularly like the shape of this one and the fact that they have lids too which stops them getting all dusty when they're not being used. Has anyone seen this type/shape of glass container with rubber seal lids anywhere or know where I can buy them in this country (preferably online)??? Here's a pic to help you out...I know the Colonial candles come in this shape in 8, 16 and 22 ounze sizes!

Containers, whether for candles, soaps or jams are very very expensive and you usually have to buy 1000s.

Why not try Dunelm or Ikea for small amounts?

Hmmmmmmmmm, that's an idea Jane, I hadn't thought of that, I've got an Ikea catalogue right next to me too although they're quite limited as to what they put in the catalogue from the market place, I assume because of seasonal variations to what they sell in that section.

I got kilner type jars from Ikea for my pickles and preserves.. the smaller ones are about 5" diameter and 4" tall.. think they are 99p each...

I did find a jar site via ebay (look up jam jars) they do sets of 12 or 18 or 24 starting at about £12.. in various shapes and sizes - not just "jam jar" shapes.. some of the nicer ones might look good as candles.. even with a * top lid..

The other option is the coffee jar type - that Yankee Candles use.. it is a bit 60's, but retro is in.. and you could buy a few jars of Douwe Egberts instant coffee.. use the coffee and the jar is "free"

Ha, I would never in a million years have thought of the Douwe Egbert coffee jars Gord, thanks for that! I've got one of them nearly finished too lol! I shall also explore the ebay thing with the jam jars too- I hadn't given that any thought either. I wonder if the lids would still stay on kilner jars if you took the wire off them? Don't really need an air tight seal as such, just a lid which stays on to keep the dust out etc.

The IKEA kilner ones have a ridge with the silicon seal on.. if you removed the seal they would sit on the top ok, but they would slide around a bit.. the silicon seal is translucent white though, so you could leave it on as an anti slip ring perhaps!

Update!

I was in IKEA yesterday, and lurking round the jars while the O/h was looking elsewhere..

Theres some nice straight sided cylinder jars, with a deep etched stripe around the middle. the lid is chrome, with a round glass insert.. £2 for a decent sized one (pint/ .5 litre?).

The kilner type jars are 89p for a .5 litre, and there are some other straight sided ones which are clear glass with a metal push on lid that have a smaller opening.. imagine a bottle type neck, but wide opening? - again around a £1..
